Dear booksellers and distributors,
dear friends of design books,
Red Dot is a publisher of design books with the mission to advance the integration of design
in modern living. Our main publications – authored in-house by the managers of Red Dot
– include annual yearbooks of internationally acclaimed design, timely sociological and business analyses in all matters of design, who’s who repertoires, theoretical discourses, and our
popular Design Diary agenda.
We look back on 20 years of experience and some 150 publications. More than just a publisher, Red Dot comprises a full-circle powerhouse and think tank for design: It boasts over
five decades of experience organizing first product shows and later also design competitions,
today considered the most prestigious design competitions worldwide. Red Dot also monitors
design-oriented companies, gathers and analyzes statistical data, and documents the results.
Our publications, emerging from this hotbed of design activity, thus constitute prime vectors
for introducing the latest developments in design.
Who would be interested in design books by Red Dot? For starters, anyone who needs to stay
up-to-date on design, such as designers and design-oriented retailers. As cultural artifacts,
the books will also interest professionals from disciplines such as advertising or engineering,
to name only a few. Last but not least, our books speak to people from all walks of life. In
particular our yearbooks, while undoubtedly several calibers above the standard “coffee table
book” category, have a huge resonance with laymen.
New in 2013: For the first time, Red Dot Edition will have its own booth at the Frankfurt Book
Fair. Please visit us in Hall 4.1, Booth G94. For more information about the books available
from Red Dot, visit our website at www.red-dot-store.org or call us at +49 201 81418-22.
We would be happy to discuss your needs and objectives – this is our e-mail address:

The packaging of NuBone Supplements for dogs is designed with
the consumer experience in mind
and aims to improve communication between the product and
those who purchase it. The new
fitted packaging is plastic-free,
recyclable and visually communicates the product line of four
different flavours: beef, chicken,
vegetable and salmon. A colour
photo of the main ingredient
stands out from the white packaging to make product selection
easier. The design is a refreshing
take on conventional pet product
packaging. It delivers essential
information to the target group
with its raw, enticing imagery
and empirical data.

This installation involves a
suspended point cloud formed
by 12,000 small, translucent
spheres, evoking the appearance
of a poetic light sculpture. The
organic and seemingly arbitrary
arrangement of these spheres
is actually based on a complex
computer algorithm that calculated both the positioning and
the projection angles of eight
high-speed laser projectors
placed around the installation.
The lasers send dense beams of
light into the point cloud arrangement, making it light up wherever the beam hits a sphere. The
graphics and three-dimensional
objects generated within the
array come to life as dynamic,
three-dimensional light sculptures.

Ando Calendar 2013
Yu’s Design
Designed as part of a series
of calendars published over the
last 20 years by a printer based
in The Hague, the Ando calendar
2013 surprises with an appearance that resembles a leporello
fold. The calendar is functional,
yet due to the use of different
patterns and colour schemes, it
looks like a unique piece of craftsmanship. Instead of being printed
using the usual CMYK process,
these standard hues were substituted with four Pantone Matching System colours plus gold. All
2,000 copies have been bound by
hand and contain twelve separate
sections.
The book Yu’s Design introduces the poster design works
of Taiwanese designer Ming-Lung
Yu from the past 20 years, as
well as the creative ideas and
thoughts behind them. The book
comes in two different versions:
a black version published by
Tungfang Design Institute and
a white version published by
Cheng Shiu University. Similar
to a book of Buddhist scripture,
it is bound in a typical Chinese
binding format and follows a
reading order from right to left
and from top to bottom.

This ultra-long-distance

questions the typical look of
equipment used by disabled
athletes. For many pieces of
mainstream consumer sports
equipment, style combined with
performance is an expectation.
For disabled athletes, the market
is narrow; visual appeal can
often take a backseat to cost

combines avant-garde aesthetics with
advanced technology, including a plug-in
hybrid electric vehicle propulsion system,
all in a single package.
It is the fourth global concept vehicle
jointly developed by Shanghai GM and
Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center
(PATAC) joint ventures in Shanghai. The
new Riviera offers a preview of Buick’s
future design direction by seamlessly
integrating advanced technologies,
flexible functions, and contemporary
aesthetics, and heralds the start of a
new chapter for the 110-year-old Buick
brand.
The design was inspired by the dynamic
nature of water. The designers took
inspiration from the Chinese saying:
“The greatest good is like water.”
The vehicle’s sweeping design has
the vibrant nature of a moving river
embodied in its athletic shape and
deeply sculpted lines.
The concept’s silhouette, with Buick’s
recognisable ‘sweep spear’, has a three-
dimensional effect that resembles waves
in the ocean coming to a standstill for a
split second. Buick’s unique swan-wing
doors exude dynamism and elegance.
The Riviera has an ice celadon finish
inspired by jade. Up front, the concept
vehicle’s updated waterfall grille and
wing-shaped daytime running lights will
both become key elements of Buick’s
future design language.
The interior carries on Buick’s signature
360-degree integrated design with high
levels of elegance and refinement. The
eaglewood-toned interior features an
abundant use of refined materials such
as sand-blasted aluminium alloy, lava
suede, and ebony used in a bold style
reminiscent of traditional Chinese jadeinlaid wood. This creates a striking visual
effect as well as a subdued sense of
luxury.
The new Riviera features a compact, yet
well-structured centre console, frontfloating seats, and an adaptive seating
system, as well as a noise-absorbing
head restraint system. The vehicle
adopts Buick Intelligent Performance
(BIP) technology. It is equipped with
GM’s new dual-mode W-PHEV (wireless
plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) propulsion
system. The user can drive the car on
green power in electric mode and still
enjoy the exhilarating handling and
performance of a sports car. The vehicle
can be charged with a traditional cable
or wirelessly via a sensory recharge
panel on the car’s chassis. The charging
port is integrated into Buick’s iconic
porthole design.
The new Riviera is also equipped
with intelligent four-wheel steering,
electromagnetic-controlled suspension,
and an air spring package for sure
handling and comfort even in extreme
conditions. The innovative mobile
internet system is designed to support
high-speed 4G LTE network use.
Real-time traffic information, weather
updates, and news and entertainment
are provided. The system also
communicates with other vehicles. The
vehicle’s voice commands and controls,
along with touch and gesture recognition,
activate a range of vehicle systems and
enable seamless interaction between
driver and vehicle.
The new Riviera employs an advanced
active safety system that collects traffic
information through ten high-resolution
cameras (for image monitoring)
and eighteen micro high-precision
sensors (for distance monitoring). The
information is analysed and presented in
a holographic image onto the windshield.
The intelligent driver-assist system
provides occupants with a high level of
active safety and security. The system
incorporates a variety of driver-assist
functions, including: an eagle view
record system, night view assist, side
blind-zone alert system, lane departure
warning system, full-speed rangeadaptive cruise control system, lane
change assist system, parking assist
system, rear cross-traffic alert system,
autopilot system, and ‘transparent’ A
pillars.

The wheelchair is styled to be an
aspirational item that has a broader
appeal than its target market. The
form of the chair communicates
that it is performance equipment
and provides an innate level of
desirability. To create an item that
will allow users to push themselves
to the limit, the engineering has
to be right, but the visual design
is just as important to ensure
the psychological aspects of
performance are considered with
the form and styling.

is a cycling jacket for the urban
nomad, as well as an innovative
mixture of technology and
fashion. The jacket is equipped
with a wearable electronic system
that powers LEDs. It offers
improved visibility and security
in the dark. Sporty Supaheroe
is a new kind of digital apparel
blending style with technology
and practical applications for
everyday life.
A system is integrated into this
high-tech cycling jacket. The

the market for eight consecutive years.
advancements have driven
materials like carbon fibre into the
mainstream, allowing exploration of
new forms that give highly visible
cues to the performance nature of
the product.
The system consists of four
interconnected patches, each of

Charles Pollock’s iconic office chair from
1965 came to symbolise the modern
office. A successor seems to have been
found in this lounge chair. Decorative
seams along with individual, handquilted seat and back covers in leather,
suede or felt are the hallmark of the
CP.1. The comfortable seat shell rests on
a polished stainless steel frame.

In tune with the times
Kitchen design has always been a reflection of the
times. Take for example the Frankfurt kitchen of
1926, which set out to create a multifunctional
environment where one could work efficiently.
The concept behind the Pia kitchen system defines
the kitchen as a functional oasis of calm, which
aesthetically enhances the home. Designed with
gently rounded corners, this kitchen system looks
as if it has been framed by an all-encompassing
delicate passepartout. This frame is painted and
covered at the edges with a decorative durable
stainless steel border. The Pia kitchen system design
idea allows for numerous versatile configurations
that will combine to form an impressively coherent
unified concept. But this kitchen system is also
functional and makes access and storage easy.
The front panels are available in all RAL colours in
matt, diamond lacquered and high-gloss finish to
adapt to changing and specific user requirements.
With its clear lines and finely rounded corners, the
Pia kitchen system harmoniously suits contemporary
architecture. Its design awakens a feeling of harmony
in those using and working in it.

Perfect composition
There are many situations which require the surroundings to be lit as effectively as possible. In the
case of police searches, for example, night has got to
be as light as day so that they do not miss the smallest detail in their search for clues. N8LED is a well
thought-out lighting concept designed for use in a
number of similar situations offering 360-degree
flood-lighting. The light intensity provided by
cutting-edge LED technology is combined with an innovative, plate-shaped design. This plate shape makes
it possible to unite several light sources to form one
ball of light, which is what gives this flood-lighting
its powerful radiance. The N8LED nonetheless exhibits an impressive formal coherence, by harmoniously
linking the black light elements that are reminiscent
of a timber-framed construction. The power of N8LED
is combined with a functionality that can be developed depending on the situation. This flood-lighting
can be assembled and taken apart intuitively without
any tools and transported easily in an ergonomically
designed bag, which is quick and simple to use. This
is an innovative design concept for the effective use
of LED technology in large spaces that has resulted
in a product with a completely new design language.
N8LED will quickly gain converts thanks to its easy
handling and functionality.

Perfekte Anordnung
So
durchdacht gestaltetes Beleuchtungskonzept, welches
Lichtmodule harmonisch miteinander vereint.
jeweils in allen RAL-Farbtönen erhältlich.
Statement by the jury
The central design element – the circumferential
passepartout – is what stands out when you look at
the Pia kitchen system. It is well balanced in its form
and is versatile so that it will suit any architectural
setting. The high quality of the materials is combined
with a high degree of convenience in everyday use.

Kitchens
The steep gradient of the terrain and the
desire to arrange all the rooms on one
level meant that this house made use of
a three-dimensional structure consisting
of reinforced concrete elements in order
to adapt to the local topography. The
swimming pool is located on a lower
level where the site is almost flat. The
concrete structure has an outer insulation layer and is rendered with flexible,
smooth white stucco, a colour that was
also used for all other materials. They
follow and highlight local traditional
architecture, while at the same emphasising the uniform appearance of the
house.
Statement by the jury
The harsh landscape and the monolithic,
apparently floating concrete building
appear in contrast and yet related.
The building expresses the peace and
serenity of the region.
Statement by the jury
The N8LED significantly widens the application
areas for LED technology. In fact, it is an archetype.
The innovative use of the plate shape shows a
fascinatingly logical approach, which combines
individual light elements to form one perfect whole.
This energy efficient 360-degree LED large area
lighting is simple to use, thought out right down to
the smallest details and is easy to transport.

With a low engine hood, the characteristic tornado line below the windows,
and sharply sloped C pillars, the Audi S3
renders a taut and sporty impression.
The interior picks up the athletic design
of the exterior: a distinct arch contours
the instrument panel, making the panel
seem to float above the centre console.
The elegant control panel for air
conditioning and the decorative inlays
in matte brushed aluminium provide
exquisite accents.
schweben scheint. Das elegante Bedienfeld
der Klimaanlage und die Dekorleisten in
mattem gebürstetem Aluminium setzen
feine Akzente.
Statement by the jury
Each detail of the Audi S3 is carefully
situated, such as the aluminium frame of

The perfect curve
Television’s technical features have been continually
refined since the 1960s to offer viewers an ever
greater viewing experience. The designers’ task is
always to find the perfect shape to house these new
technologies. The curved OLED TV was designed to
bring the innovative properties of the OLED panel,
developed by LG, to life. The new shape is intended to
accentuate the advantages of the minimal thickness
of the panel and its slim frame. At the same time,
the new product had to integrate the space for
the circuit boards harmoniously into the overall
shape. The result is an OLED television in a concave
form that gently tilts forward and which appears
balanced and minimalist. Accent colouring of a small
decorative element on the inside of the lower section
is an impressive piece of design detailing which
makes the television appear distinctive and unique.
Its curved lines make the television appear to lean
towards the viewer who can experience all the new
technological advantages with their intense feeling
of reality. The simple, yet elegant design of the OLED
TV gives this product range a memorable, new form.
The experience of the shape is linked to the intense
experience of the technology.

Perfekte Kurve

The Apple EarPods with Remote and
Mic are designed to rest comfortably
inside – and stay inside – a variety of
ear types. Unlike traditional, circular
earbuds, the design of the EarPods is
defined by the geometry of the ear,
making them more comfortable for
more people than any other earbudstyle headphone. The speakers have
been engineered to minimise sound loss
and maximise sound output and are
designed with three microphones for
clearer audio: one on the front, one on
the back, and one on the bottom. The
built-in Remote is used to adjust the
volume, control the playback of music
and video, and answer or end calls.
Statement by the jury
Anatomically formed earplugs, three
microphones and a remote control are
housed in one device. The form nevertheless remains minimalist and delicate.
Begründung der Jury
Anatomische Ohrstöpsel, drei Mikrofone
und eine Fernbedienung sind in einem
Gerät untergebracht. Die Form ist dennoch
minimalistisch und filigran.

Design Value –
A Strategy for Business Success
The fact that
“Good design is good business” has been widely acknowl-
edged for some time now. However, few efforts have been made to substantiate this claim with
hard facts and numbers. In their book Design Value – A Strategy for Business Success, authors
Peter Zec and Burkhard Jacob surveyed, evaluated, compared, and ranked companies worldwide over the course of years with regard to their design activities and performance figures,
including company worth and stock values. The results: Good design not only increases sales
but also contributes to shaping a company’s overall brand image.

Design and Business Leadership – Design Value and Stock Value
The excellent design of the product, the relatively stable pricing and the resulting profit margin
all have a very positive effect on a company’s revenue and capital position. Despite the difficult
economic situation in European markets stemming from the world-wide financial crisis, Loewe
is concentrating on forging ahead with its pricing strategy and planning to maintain its stable
prices for its home entertainment systems, while
beating the industry trend in 2009 and finishing the
year with positive results. Moreover, Loewe’s capital
structure is in a very solid position and the long
term financing arrangements are well structured
for the future. Today, Loewe is selling televisions
to customers who are willing to pay far more than
the competition charges, including Sony, Toshiba,
LG Electronics and Samsung – huge companies
compared to Loewe, which had 1,000 employees in
2008. Loewe is now enjoying a priceless image and
is undoubtedly the most coveted brand in the entire
industry.
The most important precondition for this is that
the company possesses a high degree of design competence and that its management be prepared to
take the risks and responsibility for the company’s
design decisions. In 2008, Loewe’s design value
amounted to EUR 157 million, while the market
capitalization was at EUR 112 million on December
31, 2008. This is why the stock value of the company was lower than the design value. More proof
that the in spite of a financial and business crisis,
design value remains a stabilizing factor.

The red dot institute forecasts the 2009 design
value of Loewe to be about EUR 169 million,
which would be in line with a nominal increase of
7.6%. The closing value of the company’s stock on
December 1, 2009 was EUR 118.5 million, above
what is was the year before, reflecting a nominal
increase of 5.8% just before the end of the year.
With this kind of background, Loewe can continue
building on its position as the global design leader
in its industry branch.
For these considerations and observations, we
have taken the time to examine all publicly traded
companies whose design departments have won

value-oriented marketing. Loewe was thus able to
hold its retail prices at a high level while the rest of
the market had to fight with a rapid fall in prices
and decreasing margins, as the comparison of the
average market price for 40” LCD TVs in Europe
versus Loewe’s television prices shows.

If the goal of a manufacturing company is to increase
its overall value, then it is only reasonable to invest
in design but then also to calculate the resulting
design value. It then will not be viewed just as an
intangible asset: a regular calculation and comparison of the development of design value can serve
as an indicator of the company’s future revenue
strength. Small- and medium-sized companies can
also learn important things from their current design values that they can use for future investment
planning. With time, they will see that design is both
important and relatively affordable for increasing a
company’s overall value. With fairly minimal investments in design an exceptional jump in added value
can be realized, not least an increase in overall value.
Publicly traded companies can use their design value to boost confidence in communications
with their investors. Conclusions about innovation
potential can be drawn based on the strength of
the design value. A company that does not innovate well will not be able to improve its design
value over time since it does not have a high enough
level of design strength. This is necessary, though,
in order to maintain a suitable measure of design
continuity. Without sufficient design continuity
and design strength, the calculation of design value
cannot come to a satisfactory level. Besides, there
is one more thing that speaks to design value as a
reliable factor: it is nowhere near as volatile as the
stock market.

of the high-quality audio and video systems must
also be taken into consideration. Loewe’s audio
systems compete against Bang & Olufsen and Bose,
while the LCD TVs compete not only against Bang
& Olufsen but also Sony, Philips and LG Electronics. These are just as important to calculating the
design value as the largest revenue producing
products are. For 2008, the design value was
about EUR 157 million. Compared to the previous
year, Loewe’s design value jumped 49.5%. For
the year 2009, the red dot institute projected a
design value of about EUR 169 million, despite the
financial crisis and associated risks – a nominal increase of 7.6%. Even though Loewe suffered a loss
of revenue in 2009, the company was nevertheless
“more profitable than the general industry trend,”
explained Loewe CEO Frieder C. Löhrer. With its goal
of 250 Loewe flagship stores world-wide by the end

The change in market prices over three years shows
very clearly how Loewe has been able to maintain
its retail prices for premium products at a high level, and in the last quarter, reported a difference
of 283% over the average retail price in the 40”
television category. The increased value lies in the
quality and design strength of the products.
Although Loewe’s LCD TVs, representing 86.5%
of the company’s revenue, make up the most important component of its revenue stream, calculations

Red Dot Design Yearbooks
are real-time chronicles
of the latest design developments in product design. As such, older editions are veritable
showcases of design history and, in publication since 1991, span over two decades. Observing
product design over time is vital for anyone seeking to understand the nature of design trends,
e.g., product designers or purchasing managers from retail who are responsible for developing,
launching, marketing, and selling products. Design historians, university professors, and libraries are also among the main target clientele in terms of collecting.
Our tip to design professionals: Start your collection of Red Dot Design Yearbooks now! And,
watch your collection grow, year by year, edition by edition. As chronicles of our time, the
yearbooks brim with documentation on the latest must-have and nice-to-have products. They
also serve as lifestyle guides und indispensable reference works.
Red Dot Design Concept Yearbook
and International Yearbook
Communication Design.
Design professionals not only
need to stay abreast of the latest trends in design, they also need to observe and examine
trends in a cross-inspirational context over time. Red Dot has been publishing its International
Yearbook Communication Design since 2006, and the Red Dot Design Concept Yearbook since
2005. We encourage all design professionals, and especially those from communication design,
to engage in the rewarding experience of collecting the International Yearbook Communication
Design on an annual basis. Product designers, for their part, are invited to “make a contract
with the future” by collecting the Design Concept yearbooks, which predict promising trends in
product design. The idea is not simply to collect these works for the sake of owning them, but
to develop a culture of observing design over time and on an ongoing basis.

Backlist Red Dot Edition
www.red-dot-store.org
In the following
pages, the Red Dot backlist is presented. Our main
publications are the yearbooks, which champion the world’s best achievements in design for
a given year. These are published for product design, communication design, and design concepts respectively. In keeping with Red Dot president Peter Zec’s belief that “communication
needs design,” each yearbook is a creative product in and of itself that incorporates the design
spirit of its time. The design catalogs are thus visually appealing, not to mention fun! In
addition to high-resolution photographs and sophisticated layout, they also contain detailed
product descriptions and interviews with acclaimed designers. With our other books, Red Dot
engages in contemporary discourse on design. Among these publications is the newly published Design Value – A Strategy for Business Success, by Peter Zec and Burkhard Jacob of Red
Dot. The book presents the elaborate study undertaken by the authors to deliver hard facts and
numbers in support of the claim that “Good design is good business.”
